Design:
ASUS has encased the Memo Pad 7 in a simple plastic exterior, which has a visually and tangibly attractive rear – curved design with a soft touch finish. It feels good to hold and weighs only 295g which means it’s comfortable to hold with just one hand – the perfect companion on an overcrowded train journey!
Considering the lightness and affordability of this device, along with the impressive battery life which is reviewed in detail further on, it would be particularly great for kids, and the perfect holiday companion.
Screen/Camera:
The device has a 5-megapixel rear camera, like the one found on the iPad mini & iPad Air, and a VGA-quality camera at the front. The rear camera takes sharp and well-exposed pictures, and camera features such as Time Rewind – which takes a picture 2 seconds before and after you hit the shutter button as well as having a fast burst mode, are very useful touches. The front camera is 2-megapixel; along with 720p video recording makes it ideal for video calls.
The screen panel on the Memo Pad 7 is very similar to the previous HD version of the device; which has a 7” screen with 1280 x 800 screen resolution. The ASUS Memo Pad is great for casual use, however if you require a tablet with a particularly high-res screen such as for gaming, this may not be the best option.
If you’re using the tablet in the sun you may experience slight issues with reflections, however the brightness can be altered to make this less of an issue, and the colour reproduction and 178-degree viewing angles are great, which makes up for this shortcoming. The IPS-type screen excels in providing solid viewing angles. The Memo Pad 7 also allows you to alter the saturation and colour temperature of your tablet display so image tones are adapted to your personal preference.
Software:
This device operates on Android 4.4 KitKat, and features ASUS’ Zen user interface which has an easy-to-use design with a custom lock screen, a pleasant menu system and notifications bar; overall it has been redesigned to be more playful. You can also “lock” apps on your tablet which is a useful touch; particularly if your children enjoy using it too.
Performance:
The Memo Pad 7 is very similar to its predecessor as stated earlier; however the CPU is a notable difference, as this device features an Intel Atom Z3745 processor which is a component of the Bay Trail family of chips. This powerful processor is impressive for such an affordable device, along with having 1GB RAM.
Battery life:
The ASUS Memo Pad 7 has a great battery life, with a full charge enabling a considerable 10 hours of video play (without Wi-Fi and medium brightness). This is a great advantage for a tablet with such a powerful processor, and means multitasking and on-the-go use can be done easily without worrying about carrying a charger along.
Want the battery to last even longer on your device? ASUS cleverly offer power-saving modes which optimise energy usage, and you can make use of these alongside adjusting brightness levels to prolong the battery life for long haul flights or extended use. You can easily have a movie marathon with this tablet – without the need for a charger all weekend!
Audio:
The ASUS Memo Pad doesn’t have the greatest sound quality, however the battery life and portability of this device makes up for this slight insufficiency. It features good quality sound, with the placement of the speaker on the rear of the tablet – and you can use maximum volume without experiencing crackly speaker distortion which is a bonus!
Whether such an affordable and portable device would even require exceptional sound quality is debatable, as most users would prefer this tablet for casual use, alongside their mandatory desktop PC or laptop. Despite this, ASUS's AudioWizard app improves the audio quality considerably, and it’s especially useful when watching movies, helping soundscapes and making the dialogue clearer, as well as adding bass to music.
It is evident that the ASUS Memo Pad 7 has excellent performance for such a low price. It’s particularly great as a laid-back device for daily use for example checking emails, streaming videos, or casual gaming. The great battery life makes it a brilliant companion when you need a device on-the-go or for quick meetings. Furthermore, special touches by ASUS such as their own various apps enhance the quality of the device greatly.
