Laptops and desktops are also the more popular choice for online shopping, probably due to the larger screen size, and the easier exploration of websites on desktop versions rather than mobile versions. The use of handsets for researching products online has increased considerably, however they are still not as popular as other devices for this use.
Bronto Software is a retail marketing specialist and their research confirmed the preference of desktops and laptops for online shopping. Bronto Software’s Europe Marketing Director Georges Berzgal said:
“Whilst a large proportion of the population owns a smartphone and uses it more frequently for browsing, the findings indicate that traditional devices, such as laptops and desktops, still play a large role when buying online.
We’ve reached a point where consumers are using multiple devices for their shopping journey. Our findings indicate that a number of consumers still prefers to browse for products on their smartphone and to complete the purchase on a traditional device”.
Although it is evident that desktops and laptops are the more popular choice for internet access and online shopping, research in Britain has shown that people spend twice the amount of time on mobile devices than others. In the teenage bracket, smartphones ownership is at 90%, and even the older generation (55-64) have also reflected the surge in smartphones, as now 50% also own smartphones –a considerable rise from 19% in 2012.
As phablets become more and more popular, the preference of desktops and laptops over handsets may diminish.
